RMD Deadlines Explained: The First-Year Delay Can Create a Tax Bunching Problem

Learn when required minimum distributions generally start, how the first-year delay works, and what to do if a withdrawal is missed.

1

RMDs generally begin at age 73, with exceptions depending on the account and circumstances.

2

The first RMD can be delayed until April 1 of the following year.

3

Later annual RMDs are due by December 31, so a first-year delay can bunch withdrawals into the next year.

4

A missed RMD can trigger a 25% excise tax, reduced to 10% with timely correction.

Does an automatic withdrawal instruction guarantee my RMD is met?

No. Confirm that the instruction covers the correct account, amount, and year and that the distribution completes. Account transfers or changed settings can leave the instruction incomplete.

Can I take more than the required minimum?

Usually you can, subject to account terms, but consider taxes and your spending plan. An excess withdrawal generally does not reduce the minimum required for a later year.
