HSA vs FSA: Choose by Eligibility, Cash Flow, and Unused Money

Compare HSA and health FSA eligibility, 2026 contributions, unused balances, job changes, and the spending needs that shape your choice.

1

HSA contributions require qualifying coverage and other eligibility conditions.

2

An HSA balance stays with you; a health FSA can involve forfeiture deadlines.

3

Employer HSA contributions count toward the annual contribution limit.

4

Account tax benefits do not replace a comparison of health plan costs.

Can both spouses make an HSA catch-up contribution?

If each spouse qualifies for the age-based catch-up, each generally needs their own HSA for their catch-up contribution. Ask a tax professional to check eligibility and the household contribution allocation.

Can I deduct an expense that my account already reimbursed?

You cannot claim two tax benefits for the same expense. Keep records showing which expenses were reimbursed and ask your preparer how unreimbursed expenses are treated.
